Tutors & Learning Specialist

Western Mennonite School provides:

» If the student is on an IEP or 504 plan, the WMS learning specialist will communicate modifications/accommodations suggested on the plan to the student’s teachers.

» The learning specialist will represent WMS at IEP meetings.

» The learning specialist will collect documentation needed for IEP meetings and testing services.

» If a concern arises about a possible learning disability, the learning specialist will aid in connecting the parents with Salem-Keizer public schools for testing services.

» If the student does not qualify for an IEP but still requires modifications/ accommodations in order to succeed, the learning specialist will write a plan and communicate this plan to the student’s teachers.

» When available, the learning specialist will read tests to students and assist them with larger assignments.

» Professional tutoring services are available during the seven-period school day at a rate of $26.00 per period. This price is subject to change from year to year. Tutoring may be part-time or full-time and is scheduled like a class.

» Supervised Study Hall is available for high school students needing additional help and/or supervision. This is scheduled during the seven-period school day at no additional charge. In SSH, a tutor works with a small group of students set apart from independent study hall.

» Peer tutoring is offered if qualified high school students apply for this campus job position. The cost is $5.00 per hour.  Peer tutoring occurs after school in the library.

» Period 8 is set aside for high school students to meet with teachers as needed. The school avoids scheduling sports, music, and drama practices during this protected time. Teachers will aid students one-on-one when possible.

» A modified diploma is offered for those students who cannot succeed with regularly required coursework and who are on an IEP.

» Accommodations for standardized tests are allowed if provided for in an active IEP plan and approved by Collegeboard.

» Title I services are available for qualifying students.

» Limited assistive technology: Voice recognition software, Alphasmart portable keyboard, some recorded books.

» SLEP Testing (Secondary Level English Proficiency) for English language learners.

Services not available at WMS:

» Testing for learning disabilities. However, WMS can help parents connect to Walker Middle School or West Salem High School for this free service if the student qualifies.

» Free, regularly scheduled one-on-one tutoring or remedial support.

» Full-time student aids or assistants.

» Guarantees that tutors will be available when desired.

» Full-time learning specialist services. This is a part-time position, so appointments will need to be made according to her work schedule.

» Guarantees of good grades. It is primarily up to the student to achieve.

» Tracking of teachers’ compliance to Plans for Modifications/Accommodations. Parents must be in communication with teachers and advocate for their own children. Plans will be mailed to parents. The learning specialist will attend parent-teacher meetings to discuss plans if requested.
