Equipping students for a life of faith & learning

Why Western?

Many students and families ask the question, “Why Western?” as they seek out their options in secondary education. Highlighted below are reasons why families choose WMS and students get involved in their education.

Established Christ-Centered Education & Community

Since we were established in 1945, Western Mennonite School faculty and staff have mentored and discipled students for a life of faith and learning. We have a fully accredited program that offers college preparatory curriculum taught in a Christ-centered atmosphere.

Small Class Sizes

We continually strive to maintain small class sizes for students and faculty to form relationships of accountability and respect. In providing a smaller classroom setting, students are able to receive a personalized education where they can grow with their peers academically, socially and spiritually. Our student/teacher ratio is 15:1.

Student Opportunities

One of our goals is to provide a variety of opportunities for students to grow and develop outside of the classroom. Both middle school and high school students have the option to participate in athletics, music, drama, clubs, academic endeavors, and service & leadership activities.

Mini-Term Course

The last week of school, high school students complete an intensive learning course called Mini-Term. This unique experience takes students into new cultures and settings, exposes them to different viewpoints, and expands on their acquired life skill sets. Over the years, Mini-Term has taken students to 10 states and 11 different countries.

Rural Campus Setting

Our campus is located between Salem and McMinnville, Oregon, approximately seven miles north of West Salem on Wallace Rd (HWY 221). We are located on 45 acres of wooded property surrounding our classroom buildings and innovative academic & media center. Also on campus are dorms, gyms, athletic fields, and Western Mennonite Church where school chapel, drama performances and concerts are held.

International Program

The WMS International Program was created to fulfill our desire to be a global community. Since 1945, Western has hosted students from 38 different countries and today is one of the most diverse Oregon schools for its size. Currently, international students represent 14% of our high school population and 22% of the school student body are in the minority.

Anabaptist Heritage Emphasizing Peace & Service

Western Mennonite is committed to teaching the Bible as the inspired Word of God, upholding an Anabaptist interpretation. Rooted in our Mennonite heritage, we place a high value on living a lifestyle promoting peace and service. Faculty members incorporate these principles in their classroom and in projects to help students gain an understanding beyond themselves.

Dorm & Transportation Options

Students have the option to dorm on campus through the school week or make it a permanent residence for the academic year. Surrounded by caring staff members and host families, students learn independent living skills and are guided in learning responsibility and stewardship. For day students, we offer bus transportation to and from Salem, McMinnville, Dayton, Amity, Keizer and Woodburn.

Student Grants Available

We believe the cost of private education should not hinder students from applying or being accepted into our program. It is our desire to work together with families on affording tuition, so we offer financial assistance. Thanks to donations by generous alumni and friends, approximately half of the student body received grants this year.
