Pioneer softball team places second in state
Westside Newspaper – JULY 2011
On Friday, June 3, Western Mennonite School placed second in 2A/1A OSAA Softball. This is the first time in school history for the Lady Pioneers to make the state tournament. In the Championship game, they lost to the Regis Rams 4-1; they finished the season with a record of 22-7.
The Pioneers wrapped up the regular season second in the Tri-River League, behind Regis who was undefeated in league play. Western Mennonite went into the state tournament defeating Lost River 7-0 and the defending State Champions Pilot Rock 1-0, moving them into the semi-final game against second-in-state ranked Glendale. After beating the Pirates 1-0, the Pioneers were in the Championship game at the Oregon State University Softball Complex.
In the first inning of the Championship game, the Pioneers went up 1-0, scoring Freshman Jordyn Wright on a single by Senior Abby Barr. The ladies held the Rams to no score until the fifth inning, where they scored one unearned run. In the sixth inning, Regis took advantage of Western Mennonite errors and scored three runs. In the bottom of the seventh, the Pioneers gave it their last effort, loading the bases with one out. But the Rams found two more outs in a fielder’s choice and pop fly, ending the Pioneers’ hopes of a State Championship title.
However, the team considered the season a success. “I’m just so proud of the girls,” commented WMS Head Coach Brian Wright, “They played their hearts out and never gave up.” |
