Western Mennonite School has a proud tradition of choral singing. We offer multiple levels of choir for middle and high school students. Middle School Choir is an elective for 6th-8th grade students who want to learn more about singing or who already enjoy singing. High School Concert Choir is a fine art elective for 9th-10th grade students who wish to continue their choral singing experience or are new to choir. These groups perform several times per year on the WMS campus.
SUPPORT OUR MUSIC DEPARTMENT
A Cappella Choir is made up of auditioned 11th-12th grade students who have prior choral experience. This is our flagship ensemble and the public face of the WMS music department. A Cappella Choir competes in the OSAA and regularly advances to the 1A/2A State Championship each May. The choir also represents Western at the ACSI NW Regional Choral Festival each spring. This five day trip is a highlight for a cappella members. Students fundraise and put on a special benefit concert to raise money for the trip.
Western Singers is a select group of a cappella members who meet before school each day to work on additional music. Repertoire includes jazz, spirituals, hymns, show tunes, and popular literature. This group performs locally in an effort to bring positive publicity and community involvement to WMS.
Western also has a fledgling instrumental music program. We currently have Concert Band, which includes students from grades 6-12. This group is for both beginning and experienced players. As the program grows, a beginning and advanced band will be formed. The current Concert Band performs several times per year on the WMS campus.
